biography

My journey into music was an unexpected one. At age eleven, I was met with resistance every step of the way in my desire to join the middle school football team because my mother feared that I would get hurt playing that sport. I reluctantly succumbed to my parents wish that I experience playing a musical instrument for one year. A deal was struck that if I did not like it after that period, I could stop playing and move on. My music making turned a corner as my interest increased after hearing jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson in concert and then picking up a tape of Louis Armstrong. Playing the trumpet seemed a simple task until I learned that Gypsy Rondo on page twenty-six of the Breeze Easy method book would require practice. As I grew to the challenge, other jazz trumpet players were added to my listening palette: Clifford Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and many more. Meanwhile, I was also discovering great players on other instruments. By the time I left for college, I had also discovered, Bartok, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Boulez, and contemporary electronic music.

From these beginnings, Glenn Makos has emerged as an adventurous improviser and innovative composer who draws from diverse sources reflecting life experiences. His latest recordings, on Stop Time Records, exhibit continued growth in his music.

His group performances at New York jazz clubs include Birdland, The West End Gate, Kavehaus, and The Knitting Factory. A co-founder of the nine-piece group, New Jazz Resolution (aka NoNoNonet), Glenn also composed and arranged for the group, with the group performing and recording his compositions. One of them, his Ellingtonesque Uptown Suite  is "infused with elegance, spicy world flavor, hot sibilant percussion, and traditional style all rolled into one juicy escapade." - Veronica Timpanelli, www.jazzreview.com

He has also performed and/or recorded with Cleo Laine and John Dankworth in Bermuda, Titilayo Rachel Adedokun in Munich, and Santy y su Son de Cuba in Prague, Dave Valentin, saxophonist Danny Weiss, Joel Weiskopf, D.D. Jackson, Brian Jackson, Sean Smith, Steve Davis, Gene Lewin, Trevor Holder, John Loerhke, Leisure Class, The Awakening, Jamie Begian Big Band, Diane Moser Big Band, Lisala Beatty, Gasper Bertoncelj, Boris Kozlov, Ehud Asherie, Liza Minelli, Neil Diamond, Jay Black and the Americans, Al Martino, Jack Jones, and Jerry Van Dyke. He has also appeared in music festivals in Montreux and Brienz, Switzerland, Terni and Porto San Giorgio, Italy, and The Festival of New Trumpet Music in New York.

Glenn has a bachelor's degree in music from West Chester University, PA and a master's degree in jazz performance from the Manhattan School of Music. He is on the music faculty at the Dalton School in New York City.
